چکیده

In recent years, the Internet has proven its ability to carry real-time data, including voice. Today, a small amount of voice traffic has already been diverted from the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to the Internet. If it expands, this phenomenon can completely change the rules of the game for telecommunications. This paper presents an overview of the main technical problems to be addressed for the provision of interoperable services between IP Telephony and the PSTN. The pivotal element of the solution resides in an interworking function. This function is typically implemented in a gateway whose requirements and behavior are here analyzed in terms of signaling and control protocols (control plane), user data transfer (user plane) and management features (management plane). The presentation is structured around these three planes. The control plane defines the set of signaling protocols to be used in each networking context and the translation between them. Detailed scenarios illustrate the signal translation in the gateway allowing for the establishment of a hybrid phone call. The user plane is responsible for adapting the user data to the properties of each network channel and determines the Quality of Service of the voice call in terms of delay and speech quality. In the management plane, the issues of network, service, security and policy management are discussed.

A Signalling Interworking Solution for Heterogeneous Networking

IP based networking is seen to take the major role in the ongoing network and service converge process. However, a number of other networking solutions exist and it is anticipated that the future services will be carried to users over a diverse set of networks. This implies the need for interworking between the different network concepts and especially interworking between different signalling ...

Voice over IP (VoIP) for Enterprise Networks: Performance Implications & Traffic Models

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a rapidly emerging technology. Currently, the Internet is being wired to support voice and fax traffic. The widespread interest in VoIP is not necessarily the ability of IP to carry voice traffic but the ability to carry voice and fax traffic over data networks. The implications of this are far-reaching. That is, the Internet, for the most part, will event...

Interworking of addressing schemes in an internetwork

1-In this paper, we examine the problem of address interworking that arises when two networks of the same type (that use the same addressing format) are interconnected by a different type of network (one that uses a different addressing format). Solutions to this problem fall broadly into four categories: (i) schemes that send address resolution messages when a call/packet arrives (" pull " inf...

Network Working Group Interworking Sip and Intelligent Network (in) Applications

Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) services such as 800-number routing (freephone), time-and-day routing, credit-card calling, and virtual private network (mapping a private network number into a public number) are realized by the Intelligent Network (IN). This document addresses means to support existing IN services from Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) endpoints for an IP-host-to-phone...
